| وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ نَكِيرِ |
| Asad | : | And, indeed, [many of] those who lived aforetime17 did give the lie [to My warnings]: and how awesome was My rejection [of them]! |
| Malik | : | Those who have gone before them likewise disbelieved, then see how terrible was the way I rejected them? |
| Mustafa Khattab | : | And certainly those before them denied ˹as well˺, then how severe was My response! |
| Pickthall | : | And verily those before them denied, then (see) the manner of My wrath (with them)! |

Lit., "before them" (min qablihim). This personal pronoun relates - as does the whole of the passage beginning with verse {13} - to people of all times, who are herewith reminded of what happened to deniers of the truth in earlier times; hence my rendering of min qablihim as "aforetime". |
